CHAPTER 33

My real birthday of June 17 was as close to a normal day as could be made. I was determined to get in my walk, and other than a quick stop at the shop, I had no plans except to meet up with Sam for dinner. I was about to leave the house when Aunt Julia called to wish me happy birthday.

“You’re probably booked, popular lady, but would you be free for me to take you to lunch?” she asked, with some hesitation in her voice.

“I think I can!” I answered, surprising myself. “How very sweet of you to think of me, Aunt Julia. It will have to be a quick one. Can you just stop by the shop and we’ll have something quick on the street?”

“Sure, see you at noon!” she said agreeably. That was a nice little suggestion from her. There was a lot to catch up on between me and Aunt Julia. I wondered if she knew about Mother seeing Harry Stone. I wondered how things were going with her Harry. I had a salesman due this morning, so I knew I had to rush to the shop, as always.

Sam was gone for an early meeting, so he left a sweet card on the breakfast table. Sam’s birthday was in July, and I knew each year I would be struggling to think of something to give to a guy who had everything. It would be hard to top last year’s surprise of the gazebo. It was getting lots of use, and we would try to repeat a barbecue as we did before. It was such fun, despite a late rain. Summer rains were romantic if you were under a gazebo and if they didn’t include storms, of course.

When I got to the shop, the sales representative was there. His company sold many things, but I was particularly fond of their Christmas merchandise and unique pots. He assured me they would be here by September, which I requested. It was hard for Sally and Abbey not to give their opinions regarding my choices. For some reason, today they were welcomed, unlike other days. Jean was off today, but I was curious about what Abbey thought. Her taste was usually out of the box, and I felt I could learn something from her. She freely gave her opinion and Sally’s eyes rolled. To my own surprise, I went with Abbey’s selections, and she was thrilled.

I finally was able to respond to the happy birthday balloon on my desk and a nice tray of cupcakes. There were cards to open and Sally bragged that she made the cupcakes. I gave each employee a hug, knowing it was meant to be like a little party, but there was no time, as usual.

Aunt Julia was punctual as usual and chitchatted with the girls in the shop before we could get away. Out of habit, we walked toward Charley’s.

“This isn’t a very special treat for you, Anne,” Aunt Julia said as we entered Charley’s.
